The model is speaker-paid: speakers subscribe for visibility and profile features. Organizers search for free.
The structural difference
When a speaker writes their own profile, the profile says what they want it to say. That is not a flaw — it is the product. But it means nothing on a SpeakerHub profile is checkable from the page you are reading. You are trusting the speaker’s account of their own track record.
speakerstrail works the other way. Nobody applies. We read public conference agendas, extract who spoke, and link the source. The record is a third-party fact, not a first-party claim.
The pay-to-play question follows from the model. If speakers pay to be listed, the directory selects for speakers who can expense a marketing budget. That population is real but not representative.
